(More customer reviews)This box of small paperback books is unique from the other early reading books. The first few pages in the first book have a blank space in which to write your child's name. Every new reader who is ready to begin reading can already read his/her name, so that means they will be successful from the very first page. It has been a while for me, but I think the first page has JUST the name and a simply drawn person's face. Then, next page, happy face and "_______ is happy." Many beginning readers can get "is" and even if you sound it out, it is easy to get. Next page, a sun - almost like the face with "Sun is happy." As you hold the book open, thee two pages are next to each other so your new reader can clearly see that the sentances are the same except for the first word. Then _______ is sad, then "Sun is Sad." And on and on it goes for just a few pages. Then your new reader has read the whole book!
My son was VERY proud and excited to have done this and eager to go on to the next book in the box (labeled book 2) which was equally helpful. There are 16 books in each box, coordinated by color and numbered from easiest to hardest.
I think starting with the person's name is just brillant - it makes your new reader feel like they really CAN read something right away - that prepares them to do the other beginning reader books that are only slightly more sophisticated, but can be frustrating to someone who doubts their ability.
It is an excellent first book set and I am MOST frustrated that I cannot find it either in local booksstores or here at Amazon. Many of my friends would like to have these for their children who are learning to read and we are all hunting to no avail. I hope to see it here VERY soon - as well as the next in the series. I think it is teh "Catipillar" series.
