Ronda Lawson's Poems in "Watching Ants" take us to the simple, yet extraordinary moments of growing up.These poems take the reader inside a memory and make it come alive in a tangible and wonderful way.The images in these poems will transport the reader to a time when life was simpler.Whehter you are remembering the cracks of the sidewalk, school blackboards, or what it means to color inside the lines, the poems will titillate.Images and memory have confluence in each poem. The page to page journey in this work will resonate for a long time to come.

Lawson's words reach out and stir memories of childhood that reside quietly in our own hearts.Readers will reconnect with their own joys and uncertainties, fears and triumphs. Her craft is that of a practiced poet who draws on a wide range of techniques and experiences.more than taking a walk down a lane of memories, this is a journey into the soul of a keen observer and a dreamer.

The best, most lasing, poetry seems always to speak of universal concerns - such as making one's way through childhood yet retaining wonder and awe as something more than a lingering attachment to that not so "innocent" state.Ronda Lawson's new chapbook, Watching Ants, lists that act (as performed by a five-year-old "bare/belly to the sidewalk in July") along with others familiar to us all:"fireworks out on the lawn" (sparklers like holding "strings of magic"); imaginary friends ("We had good times"); debilitating fears (hiding from "monsters" under the covers:"I damn near/suffocated every night"); the "rough-edged rhythm" of roller skates and the "elusive floating music of/the ice creatm truck."

Although more common-senseical than metaphysical, Ronda Lawson's most recent work resembles Emily Dickinson's in the deceptively spare appearance of poems in which - as John Keats advised - "every rift" is loaded "with ore," and we are treated to a truly unique, original, individual vision of universal experience.
