(I think) it is the first English language children book that Colette Portal published In New York with George Braziller in 1964. Portal text is the story of an ant's queen and her consorts in an ants colony... The watercolors illustrations, also by Portal, are really beautiful.

The American poet Marcia Nardi (born Lillian Massell, 1901-1990) translated Colette Portal 24 pages of poetic verses which co-mingle very nicely with the drawings. It is unclear if Marcia Nardi translated from the 1964 German edition or the 1962 French edition of the book... Nardi published one collection of her poetry in 1956 (Denver, Alan Swallow Press) and a 1975 2nd edition: Poems. She wrote much more poetry and also the libretto for Composer Lee Hoiby's "Beatrice, opera in three acts" in 1960.
