The book Defiant Daughter, Divine Grace by Lorna Bogues is a brief glimpse into the life of a single mother raising a teenage girl, although I could only guess that the author and her daughter felt this period in their lives was anything but brief. The book is mainly told from the author's perspective, although there is an interview with the daughter at the end of the book.

If you've raised teenagers or if you've been a Christian for any length of time, there's no new insight into what makes teens resentful and difficult or into how God helps us through it.However, this is a good testament to God's faithfulness and how parents can be firm in a world where saying no has become unpopular, probably because it is so challenging.Bogues shows us how she did it by sharing letters she wrote to her daughter during this time and then giving explanations of some of the meanings behind the letters. Likewise, the author's style contributes to the message of the book. And just as God knows how much one person can handle, the author seems to sense when we've read enough about the chores, the bunny, and the piano, for the book shifts at just the right point--the issues between mother and daughter become more mature and the writing becomes more expressive.

Bogues is well-grounded in her Christian faith, and in matters she felt were beyond her understanding she sought advice from Christian experts. She never claims to be a perfect parent, but her persistent faith and consistent parenting techniques (from a Biblical perspective) are noteworthy. For these reasons, her testimony is well worth reading. She got through a difficult time with her daughter without losing her mind or her child.

The only way this book could have been better is if it had been given a different title.Unfortunately, the title might suggest that the book is only for parents of teenage girls. However, the principles shared in this book can be applied to any difficult relationship, as they are straight from the Bible and they can be applied to all people. In fact, the book ends with a reflection by Bogues on how the same Christian practices that helped her with her daughter can be applied to other areas of life. Therefore, if there weren't already at least one book entitled Divine Grace, this would probably have better suited the book because this is what stands out the most after reading it.Defiant Daughter, Divine Grace is more about how God is with us, guiding us and carrying out His plans for us, even when it might feel like He has deserted us, and how when we serve Him in faith and love, and stand firm on His Word, He blesses us not only in the end but all along the journey...and that journey goes on and on.
