When I read this book to my son thirty years ago, it was a labor of love in all ways. Both of us traveled beneath the backsteps and became part of the ant colony so beautifully portrayed in this story. So many life lessonsare woven in the happenings. He loved it and so did I. We read it twice. Now he has a 6 month old son and he has already begun his son's library. Wediscussed his favorite books as a kid and sure enough, up popped "CityUnder the Backsteps" and "Shy Stegasaurus of Cricket(Cripple?)Creek" and the wonderful work of E.S. Lampman.

The Trees in My Forest Review

The Trees in My Forest

If you love books about wild animals and wish that someone would write about trees, this book is for you.Heinrich takes you to his forest in Maine and explores the trees in it.Some have personalities, and they live as part of a community of trees, animals and sometimes people.

Heinrich writes well, as readers of his other books know.Again, his natural curiosity shines through, as does his storytelling and teaching abilities.

The book includes a wonderful set of drawings by Heinrich.Unfortunately, most of them aren't discussed in the text so it's hard to know what to make of them.

Much as I enjoyed the book, I wish that Heinrich had spent some time on tree identification. It would be much easier for me to observe the trees in my forest -- if I had a forest -- if I knew all their names.

Those criticisms aside, this was a thoroughly enjoyable book.I also came away with an understanding of how a true forest differs from the monoculture tree farms that are taking over parts of our country. While he walks us through his experiences trying to maintain a forest, he also provides lessons in sustainable forestry.

A Neotropical Companion Review

A Neotropical Companion

This is just about the best introduction to the natural history of the New World tropics available and is a real bargain at this price. Another good alternative is "Tropical Nature" by Forsyth and Miyata.

I have been using this book since the first edition came out and now have both. It's also one of the books I try to pick up used to give to budding tropical naturalists. And to judge by the number of first-time visitors who carry this book, it is still proving extremely popular. I like the way the author has tried to give a broad overview of the important themes without compromising accuracy. Besides explanations of ecological processes and descriptions of wildlife, there is a strong emphasis on conservation with the final chapter devoted to "Deforestation and Conservation of Diversity". As a companion to the tropical naturalist this will be hard to beat.
