(More customer reviews)I thoroughly loved this book - it had interesting butterfly information, stories from the early times of butterfly collecting, and other great insights.It usually takes me awhile to read books due to usually being exhausted after work and only getting through a few pages per night but this one I just couldn't put down.I admit it, I do have an obsession with butterflies, but that goes for all of nature and the gifts of mother earth - so the subject matter was right up my alley.It gives good history and good interesting facts about butterflies.Loved it!

(More customer reviews)It usually takes me less than a week to read a book, however this book took me 3 weeks.I am a big fan of Omar Tyree but this book had me wondering if he had slipped.The story was just slow and boring, it tookforever to get to the point or just to get juicy period.The relationshipbetween Ant and Sharon did not seem realistic to me and both of theirfriends (Celena & Tone) were childish and extremely immature. I alsothought that Sharon was extremely pessimistic and asked too many questions,she analyzed Ant and the relationship so much that it was annoying.Forsomeone that young it's hard to believe that her attitude towards men andrelationships were so negative. After reading Flyy Girl and A Do Right ManI expectedn the same for Single Mom and Sweet St Louis but again I wasdisappointed. Mr Tyree if you read this please take us back to thecreativity of your first two novels. I am not giving up on you becauseyou've proved that you are a good writer. Overall I would still recommendthis book, but be prepared to be a little bit bored.

(More customer reviews)Let me explain my 4 stars: I would have liked to give a 5-Star for "Morpho Eugenia" and a 3-Star for "Conjugal Angel." All the reviews here are correct in that A.S. Byatt is an amazing writer thoroughly versed in Victorian England. Her observation is keen and her prose style is assured. I can't really name another author besides Byatt who manages to weave narrative and intellectual discussion so seamlessly.The first of the two novellas, "Morpho Eugenia," is immediately appealing. I was hooked by the story very quickly through lush descriptions and how Byatt deftly sets up the conflict and character dynamics. I enjoyed "Conjugal Angel" much less. This one demands much more on the readers, especially if they are not familiar with Tennyson and Hallam. Even if you're a pro in Victorian poetry, you may find (as I did) the opening confusing in setting up the premise of the drama and introducing characters. The prose seems discursive and lacking in focus from time to time--very uneven. But you can't beat the nice surprise ending, almost conventional and (dare I use the word?) sentimental, Byatt's erudition notwithstanding. :-)

(More customer reviews)This is it! Being a mother and a teacher, I have always wished my son would be more interested in reading. Finally I have found a book that Evan is enjoying so much that I have ordered another book from this series before he has finished this one.Bravo Dan Gutman!
Although I haven't read Jackie and me, I feel like I have.My son has been saying quite frequently, "Hey, listen to this."The book presents the unfair treatment of African Americans in a way that involves the reader.Evan has been told many times about slavery, segregation, and civil rights.He understood the information, but,until now I think he felt no empathy for those who were treated so unfairly.
If you have a child who enjoys baseball--get this book.Dan Gutman, thank you so much.

(More customer reviews)OK- here's the carrot- if your kids are the bookish, quiet introspective types (boys or girls) and you want to maintain that, if not reinforce and foment that- GET THEM THIS BOOK.
used copies pop up often. I've got a few saved up for birthdays and the like.
The characters are so well-constructed, and they're ants!!! Rarely has an anthropomorphic take on the insect world worked so well, at least in my eyes. I haven't messed with an ant since I read this when I was around 10 and I still bristle with anger when someone else does. Dreamer and Storyteller, Snake's Toungue, Spider, The Queen... Every character is well-developed and perfectly used. The writing is deceptively simple- i'd say elegant even. The parables that Storyteller weaves throughout are worth the price of the book alone.
Also, it's one of those books that leave you wanting to know more. I remember sitting around and imagining what else happened to Dreamer, wondering about his adventures...
I re-read this one every few years, it takes me back- a wellspring for nostalgia and fond remembrances. It's one of the books I used to get my little brother to love reading... it's wonderful, honestly masterful- succinct chapters, fantastic morals, a celebration of hope and courage and dignity in the face destruction. I kid you not, this book is a panacea for empty, nihilistic trash.
