(More customer reviews)This is the volume that introduced me to the works of Anna Akhmatova.After having read this in one evening, I could not sleep - I was so moved by her poetry. The translation must have captured her heart and soulbecause it certainly captured mine - it inspired me to get up in the middleof the night and draw pictures to go with what I had read.I understood atonce the love the Russian people have for her.Since then, I have gobbledup everything translated into English that I can find, but I still thinkthis little volume is the best of all and return to it again and again. Before the revolution, Akhmatova was a wildly popular young poet who lived a bohemian life. She was one of the leaders of a movement of poets whose ideal was "beautiful clarity"-in her deeply personal work, themes of love and mourning are conveyed with passionate intensity and economy, her voice by turns tender and fierce. A vocal critic of Stalinism, she saw her work banned for many years and was expelled from the Writers' Union-condemned as "half nun, half harlot." Despite this censorship, her reputation continued to flourish underground, and she is still among Russia's most beloved poets.

(More customer reviews)I've never read a poet who writes like Olena Kalytiak Davis.I suppose if some crazy geneticist managed to meld the minds of Poe, Longfellow, Ogden Nash, Dylan Thomas, Gwendolyn Brooks, Stevie Smith, and Sylvia Plath, then a writer similar to Davis might appear, but that's about what it would take.
She uses language unlike anyone else -- as a playground, a laboratory, a room with rubber walls.Her imagery is idiosyncratic, but always powerful, always somehow just right.Her rhythms pull her words to and fro, clattering and clashing together, bouncing off each other, bounding and rebounding across landscapes of dreams and portents.With any other poet, I'd quote some lines, but that wouldn't do Davis justice, for her poems need elbow room and time for their wonders to accumulate.With any other poet, I'd tell you, If you like X, you'll like this one -- but for Davis there is no X.She is her own equation, sui generis.
Few collections of poetry have so much to offer, so much depth and substance, so much sustenance for the reader ready to listen.

Funny (Felix Pollak Prize in Poetry) Review

(More customer reviews)... and first one (my friend) picks up a copy of "Funny" and says to the second one (me), "You should really read this poet. She's fantastic." Well, the joke is on him, because I've been following Hecht's work for a long time, in Poetry Magazine and other places.Because she -is- fantastic and this new book is quite simply brilliant.

I'm usually wary of books with a central theme or conceit, but Iwaded into "Funny" with full confidence in Hecht's amazing ability to thrill me, chlll me, make me laugh, make me cry, make me think. I'm stunned and humbled by her poems and heartily recommend "Funny" to anyone, especially new poetry readers.

My favorites in this collection are "Propogation of the Species," "Gorilla and the Darkening Room," and the sonnet "Prosody on Comedy."Do yourself a favor and get in on the ground floor with this talented poet, before she wins the major awards that are assuredly coming her way.No joke.

(More customer reviews)I'm a literary dilletante and I admit it. I picked up this book because of its swell cover and title.
Upon skimming it in the bookstore, I was hooked. Poems about life, without sappy metaphor or tricky construction.Good earthy, practical poetry. Such breadth of matter, such depth ofunderstanding. I felt that I'd met a poet of substance.
Let's leave itat this, Adair nudged me into reading more poetry, more often.
