(More customer reviews)This book was hilarious.It took a little bit to get into, but once our "heros" made it into the mountains, things really started picking up.The author uses really obscure legends (and some not-so-obscure) and blends them all into one bizarre epic adventure full of slapstick antics and really, really bad jokes.Love it!

(More customer reviews)World Hunger is a captivating read that has just enough science and detail to be plausible (which is quite frightening) and enough character development to put you completely in the shoes of the lead characters as the action happens.A quick read, I finished this book in 2 flights and didn't want to put it down.

Vanguard Corporation, an agricultural company led by a greedy and mercurial CEO, has developed a new line of genetically modified seed products. Designed to significantly increase crop yields and resist drought, pests, and disease in the hopes of reducing hunger in Third World countries, the seeds should also earn huge profits for the firm.
Vanguard's testing in Belarus, Colombia, and India initially goes well, but midway through the crops' development, reports begin to emerge of bizarre insect observations linked to incidents of domestic animal slaughter, and eventually, the death of several people. The high-growth genetic enhancements engineered into the seeds have been transferred into the insects through their ingestion of the test crops.
The strains of these "super" insects are much larger, more aggressive, and increasingly resistant to pesticides and disease than their natural counterparts. As the insects become more plentiful and widespread, Vanguard desperately combats them while dealing with the media, environmentalists, the government, and other distractions. Meanwhile, scientists, entomologists, and field operatives frantically work together to eradicate the new species and deal with the fallout of mankind's apathy toward environmental meddling.

(More customer reviews)We've Seen the Enemy is exactly what I want in science fiction: a multi-layered, good old-fashioned space opera replete with action, adventure, believable plot lines, frightening adversaries and multi-dimensional characters at whose apex is a strong female protagonist - "Jack", fearless, determined, a born leader and a closet romantic.

Apocalyptic events thrust mankind into the stars, with strange and varied consequences. What happens when society falls apart amidst the chaos of alien attack (or was it?), and how does society restructure itself, what are the new tenets, what happens when questions get raised amongst a portion of the now-small populace? There are good aliens and bad aliens, and telling the difference is not clear-cut by any means.

There's enough technology to get even the most jaded fanboy [or girl] arguing, debating and offering suggestions, yet it never buries or sidetracks the plot.

It begins with the fable, the cautionary tale, as a lesson, essays required, why, how, with what consequences, priming us for events to unfold. We flip back and forth through and around events, through time, with additional links built into each new chapter. One feels a unified whole with multiple avenues of discovery. And multiple avenues of deceit. Will time win out? Will mankind survive?

Heady questions, thought-provoking, a downright good read.

(More customer reviews)I wish it had stated clearly in the description that this is a collection of four other books!I thought it was a completely different book than the ones we already have or just bought! I am a little frustrated that I just received a book that contains four books we already own.

BUT that now said, if you dont have these books in the series already (Flashing Fire Engines, Roaring Rockets, Dazzling Diggers, Terrific Trains) this is a GREAT book to have.An affordable way to get these four books at once. And I have been unable to find our copy of Terrific Trains - which is one of my son's favorite books - so unknowingly I now have new copy of it here!!! (of course, our original copy will resurface now!)

Transportation/Vehicle crazy toddlers will love these books - the illustrations are fun and the ryhmes are great. But sometimes tough for mom and dad the first few run throughs. I am in awe that my newly verbal child will ask for the other books in the series we have by name ("can we read tremendous tractors momma?" ... "I want amazing airplanes dadda")

I think we have all the books in this series now and eagerly await the next ones in paperback.

In my frustration, I would have given this book 5 stars except for the fact that the description didnt better state that it was a collection - or that I didnt see that info noted. (Doh!)
