The New Testament: A Facsimile of the 1526 Edition Review

The New Testament: A Facsimile of the 1526 Edition

A great facsimile.I collect Bible facsimiles, and this is the very best.It is also wonderful that by far, it is the lest expensive. The reprodution is one of the very, very best that I have ever seen.Far better than ones costing hundreds of dollars. The fact that it is still one of the very best English translations ever done makes it all the much better. The above reviewer's statement that it is not clear is not correct, it is perfectly clear.Perhaps that reviewer is not use to old style Gothic type? This is the most important Bible that was ever translated and printed, and it is a miracle that we can still read and enjoy the very first early modern English Translation from the original Greek.
This Bible was originaly printedalmost 5 hundred years ago, and it is still perfectly readable today. It is actualy in more modern English than the later King James Version.Indeed the KJV copied straight from this Bible into theirs.

Product Description:
The publication in 1526 of a modestly-priced pocket edition of the New Testament in English was arguably the most important single event in the history of the English Reformation. Between 1525 and 1535 Thomas Tyndale gave us the English Bible, translating the whole of the New Testament and half the Old Testament. His pocket-sized Bibles were smuggled into England, ruthlessly sought out by the Church, confiscated and destroyed. Tyndale himself was condemned as a heretic, strangled and burned outside Brussels in 1536. This volume is a complete facsimile of William Tyndale's pioneering translation of the New Testament from Greek into English, held at the British Library, and only one of the two last copies remaining in the world. The British Library produced an edition of the Tyndale Bible with original spelling but a modern typeface. It has sold over 10,000 copies and remains one of our most popular and well received titles.--This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

Palestine in the Time of Jesus: Social Structures and Social Conflicts Review

Palestine in the Time of Jesus: Social Structures and Social Conflicts
Average Reviews:

Palestine in the time of Jesus is an excellent resource for students of scripture, preachers, and anyone who is interested in life at the time of Jesus Christ. The book pays attention to the archeological evidence that can help us better understand scripture, but its greatest strength is the way in which it looks at the social world of Jesus' days. Hansen and Oakman delve into topics such as kinship, patronage, public religion (as opposed to personal faith) and economic realities. Some of the information in the book can be somewhat complicated, especially when a twenty first century reader attempts to think in terms of the mindset of a person living in ancient Palestine, but thinking in the mindset of a person in the ancient world can help a reader better understand the world Jesus was speaking to and apply the message to the world of today. Preachers who are tired of delivering the same old sermon or homily can find new twists for old passages after reading this book--insights that can challenge congregations to think about scripture in a new way without upsetting the faith.
The book has an ample bibliography fore students doing research. It also contains a scriptural and ancient writings index, an author cited index, as well as a general index for quick reference.
Just an interesting note: When I first purchased this book two years ago, I looked for reviews by putting the name Douglas Oakman in a search engine. In the process I came across his own website that includes a listing of his other publications as well as links to other scripture related sites. H e also includes links to some of his other interests including jazz and railroads.

New Testament History Review

New Testament History
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In this book Dr. Bruce explores Jewish and Christian history leading up to and including the time of the early Christian church, focussing mainly on the centuries immediately surrounding Jesus' life.

Bruce looks at both Biblical and external sources to tell of the major political, sociological and religious themes of the period from an historical perspective. He provides a running assessment of the degree reliability of each along with the content they provide.Bruce strikes an honourable balance: not "critically" dismissing Biblical evidence as unreliable, not picking out of it the elements that happen to agree with his preconceptions as the only reliable bits, but also not accepting the New Testament record without even considering any other sources to understand its contextual meaning. He rather builds the history of the current events to give context to the different views expressed in each source as they were being written.Generally, Bruce finds the Biblical documents as trust-worthy, while for example dividing Josephus' writings into the bits that are more accurate and those which were likely "spun" to gain the favour of his audience.

This book is structured largely chronologically.

In the period from the Hasmoneans through the time of Jesus, Bruce looks at the various competing schools of thought within Judaism, and provides insight into how they tie together. The intrigue by which the Herod who kills the infants of Bethlehem kills his own children, the politics around which the various governing parties who periodically appoint and fire high priests, the influence between Jewish and Roman rulers, the structure of the TNK Old Testament which explains Jesus' own quotes, all add depth to what I have long been familiar with from the Bible itself.

In the era immediately following Jesus, Bruce casts light on the differences between the Jewish and Gentile churches, and provides context around much of Paul's and Luke's writings in this light. Most of the discussion on this period within the church is limited to the New Testament documents, though the fewer details available from external sources are also listed. Finally, Bruce describes how after Titus' destruction of the Temple, the various schools within Judaism were reduced to one "accepted" thread which no longer included Christianity.

Bruce introduces us to variants in the historical record - including such factors as people not well familiar with Christianity referring the Jesus not as Christos, but rather Chrestos - a common slave name - or how the (Christian) "Nazarenes" were confused with another sect, the "Nazaraeans".There are several such changes in expression -- very similar in the language of the day, but totally lost on those of us who speak languages to the west of Greek -- that are interesting and provide some insight into how non-Christians then and now today see Christianity.

I am saddened first to read Dr. Bruce's work only now, 14 years after his "glorification" (to use an example of the New Testament language he interprets for us).Equally, though, we are fortunate to still benefit from his knowledge and wisdom now.I heartily commend this book to everyone who values the New Testament, to better understand the backdrop of the world in which its authors lived and wrote.

This cassette has musically rich tunes with sound, biblical lyrics.Judy Rogers uses mostly guitar with her songs. She has a very pleasant-sounding voice. She comes from a Reformed background - each song is well-written and pure in its doctrine. This tape has songs encouraging children to enjoy their work, to keep their conversation edifying and to listen to the words of their parents. My children have grown up listening to her many tapes - this one is for the younger ones, say ages 3 to 10.I have bought over a dozen copies as birthday gifts for friends of mine.Enjoy!

Spring Is Here!: A Story About Seeds (Ready-to-Read: Ant Hill) Review

Spring Is Here: A Story About Seeds

My daughter is only 18 months. She won't show too much interesting on every book I bought for her. But she likes this one. The color of the bookis bright and beautiful. She learnt the words: "seed", "bud", "rain" etc. from the book.

There are not too much story inside but some simple words and very short sentence said by ants. Each ant has a name. That's the only thing we try to ignore now. I think my daughter is too small to understand them now. Maybe I am wrong.

My 9-year-old granddaughter just finished Meghan Rose has Ants in Her Pants and wrote a letter to the author. Here's an excerpt from her letter: "I would like you to write some more [books] if you don't mind. I love your books, and I think other kids would too. Maybe you could write 18 more if you have time to. I hope I could get them all." So Meghan Rose is a hit with my granddaughter!
